Spring Cleaning

27 Mar

It’s been a long time coming.  Today, I decided it was time to say goodbye to some old poor performing stocks like 200 shares of Manulife Financial Corp (+$16.10), 110 shares of Pengrowth Engery (-$103.44) and last but not least, 300 shares of Potash Corporation (-$99.90).

I welcome back Chemtrade Logistics to my core portfolio once again.  I had the misgiving of selling my shares too prematurely.  If I had kept them, I’d be several thousands in the green.  It is a unit trust pays 10 cents per month, in which, I’ll be receiving $109/month in distributions.

QT RRSP-  240 @ $16.58
QT TFSA- 850 @ $16.58

I’m on the heavy ended on this stock, it’s a bit risky for me if the stock does go down a dollar or more. But I know if I’ll forget about for a year, I’ll be receiving $1308 in the end.  Of course, I hope shares will appreciate to $18 then I’ll be in the money!

Good Old Cliff’s

14 Mar

I re-bought Cliff end of February at $65.60 on a decline…  then it declined some to a low of $59ish.  That’s when I should have swoop in and averaged down.  However, I already have more than half of this stock on margin.  So I steered clear of getting myself heavier at loss and debt!

Today, Cliff jumped a good 10% and counting due to dividend increase.  Instead of sitting at a loss, I’m at a paper gain of $538.05 at this time!  Should I keep this or sell?  So difficult… to make what will become of tomorrow’s trading day.  Could this be the works of options trading?  Trying to meet their strike price?

Notable Mention:  Manulife made a big leap today at 9%.  Finally in the green, I shall be looking to making my exit with this stock soon.

Downsizing my number of stocks!

24 Feb

Time to re-evaluate my stock portfolio.  Truth be told, I have a few stocks working at too many different ways.  If I had invested 100 shares instead of 40 shares of Mastercard, I’d be sitting on a $6458 profit!  But really, do I want to tie up so much money into one stock?  Not really, but on the other hand, all my other little stocks are tying up my money with losses or with little gain.

Who’s on my chopping block?  These are companies that have not performed to my expectations.  Free up some cash and invest into ONE stock.

  1. 100 shares of BMO:  Current loss of $254.95, quarterly dividends -> sell at breakeven
  2. 200 shares of MFC:  Current loss of $234.95, quarterly dividends -> sell at breakeven
  3. 500 shares of POT:  Current loss of $339.50, quarterly dividends, overweight -> sell at $1000 gain
  4. 110 shares of PGF:  Current loss of $69.85, monthly dividends -> sell at breakeven
  5. 100 shares of ECA:  Current gain of $204.05, quarterly dividends -> sell at $250 gain

Sell Limit for Cliff Natural Resources

12 Jan

Sticking to my word, I set a sell limit price of $70 for Cliff Natural Resources earlier in the morning of yesterday.  It sold shortly after in the day.  My profit is $369.96 for holding CLF for two days.  If I had held it to today, CLF jumped another 96 cents from my buy in price.

Thank you CLF, I will buy you again when the time is right!

Side Note:  I bought MFC in my QT RRSP on January 9th- 100 @ $11.40.  Today, I sold it for $11.73.  My profit is low at $22.75, but I don’t want to hold onto this one for long as I want a monthly distribution for my RRSP.  Besides, I have another 200 shares at a loss $366.95.

Missed Chances

28 Oct

Looking back on Tuesday and Wednesday, it was the perfect opportunity to get back into stocks that I was looking at CLF, MA for USD stocks and LLL, TCK.B for CAD stocks.  But I was being iffy and didn’t want to take the chance.  On Thursday, all stocks across the board made a significant jump due to Euro debt situation being resolved.  Pulling my hair out as I missed the launch of some great gains.

For now, I’m sitting on the sidelines with cash on hand… it’s kind of boring, but I don’t want to make the mistake of buying at its high!

My two biggest losers right now are XFN down $647.15 and JE down $834.00, both of them do pay a monthly dividend of about $70/mo.  BMO and MFC have made some lead way back to my buy in price.  Once they have reached into profitability, I’m selling those in a heartbeat!

October is coming to an end… I made my quota for $500/mo profit 🙂  Maybe I should set my sights on a higher profit.  Better not get ahead of myself now!
